Winning a Targeted Selection Interview


Employers using Targeted Selection techniques are taking a behavioral approach to maximize the chances of choosing the right people for their company.

Far from being worried about this technique, people you should see this as giving them an advantage at the interview, because they will be prepared and know what the employer is looking for.

The interviewer will be looking at your past roles to identify the person who has the attributes, attitude and behavior style they want for their company.

It is strongly believed that past behavior is a good way of predicting future behavior. They want to understand as much as possible, how you will fit into the organization.

The whole point of asking behavioral questions, is for the interviewer to understand the way you may behave in a given circumstance, so the way you answer the questions will determine your success.

If you understand the types of questions you may be asked, and clearly understand the position and what the company is looking for, this shouldn’t be hard for you to present well at the interview.

For example, if you’re asked a question like:

“Tell me about a time when you went above and beyond the call of duty. What happened? Why did you do it?

The interviewer is obviously looking to see if you have the initiative to get on and find ways to get the job done. They’re looking to see that you have a “can do” attitude……so your answer should be positive, clear and give specifics.

You can ALWAYS expect to be asked these kind pf questions, so BE PREPARED and be sharp.

If you are asked questions like:

“How do you respond to pressure? Can you give me an example of a time when you were under pressure to deliver? What happened?”

And you answer…I don’t really like pressure… I guess we know this isn’t the job for you…the key is to use an example of a situation where you came out strongly…if you don’t have one yourself, think about someone else and use their example… and get as much information as you can about the role and the company before the interview.

Remember, the employer is hiring for their business, to get a job done and for the new person to be a strong contributor to their team…if you want the role, that should be your focus.

Don’t schmooze…it’s great to fake it ’til you make it…but make sure you Can make it!

There is a whole world of great people out there. Many just don’t know how to use their inherent skills to advantage, so all you need to do is show them that you’ve done your preparation and you’re the one for their company.
